A rule that I disliked at school was the strict ban on talking during lunch breaks. This was introduced when I was in the eighth grade, after a group of students had made a lot of noise and a teacher complained to the headmaster.
From then on, we were required to eat in silence in the canteen, and teachers walked between the tables to make sure nobody spoke. If anyone was caught talking, they were given a warning, and after three warnings, their parents were told. The school's reasoning was that the canteen had become too noisy and disorderly, and that quiet meals would help students concentrate in the afternoon.
Most students reacted with frustration. We saw lunch as the only time of the day when we could relax and speak to friends, so the rule felt like a punishment for everybody. Some students tried to whisper or communicate with gestures, which became a kind of game, and a few were caught regularly. In the end, a small group of us wrote a polite letter to the headmaster asking him to reconsider, but we received no response.
I disliked it for several reasons. First, I felt it was unfair for everybody to suffer because of a few people. Second, I believe that social interaction is an essential part of school life, and being silent made the atmosphere unpleasant. Third, it did not actually solve the problem; students just talked more loudly in the corridors afterwards.
In retrospect, I understand that the school wanted order. But I still think a better solution would have been to explain the problem to us and set reasonable limits.
