I'd like to talk about a disagreement I had with my best friend, Aziza, about a year ago. We had planned to go on holiday together, and we couldn't decide where. I wanted to go to the mountains for hiking and fresh air, but she was dreaming of a beach holiday with lots of shopping and restaurants.
The discussion began calmly, but gradually became more heated. I said that beach holidays were boring because you did nothing for a week, and she replied that I was always imposing my plans on everyone. We both said a few things that we didn't really mean. In the end, we stopped talking for the rest of the evening, and the following day neither of us sent a message, which was unusual, as we talk almost every day.
After two days, I realised that it was silly to let a holiday destination damage a friendship. I called her and said that I was sorry for what I'd said. She admitted that she also felt bad. We talked for an hour and decided to meet halfway: we chose a seaside town that has a national park nearby, so we could spend some days on the beach and one day walking in the hills.
Afterwards, I felt relieved and, to be honest, a bit embarrassed about how childish I'd been. But the discussion helped us to understand each other better. I learned that listening is more important than winning an argument, and our friendship is stronger now, because we know we can disagree and still stay close.
