In Germany, for instance, the dual education system gives apprenticeships a high status and keeps youth unemployment low.

In conclusion, the focus on degrees stems from pay differences, employer expectations and social pressure, but apprenticeships, vocational training and self-directed learning offer valid alternatives. Young people should choose the path that suits their talents and goals rather than assuming that university is the only option.
