Social attitudes play a part too: parents often regard university as a mark of success and encourage their children to follow that path, and some students go because their friends do or because they are unsure what else to do. However, a degree is not the only route to a rewarding career. Apprenticeships allow young people to earn while they learn a trade such as engineering, electrical work or hospitality, and often lead directly to a permanent job without any student debt. Vocational colleges provide practical qualifications in areas like nursing assistance, design and information technology. Others might start their own business or work as freelancers, using free online courses to build skills in coding, marketing or languages. Some could gain experience first through a gap year or work placement before deciding whether further study is necessary. In Germany, for instance, the dual education system gives apprenticeships a high status and keeps youth unemployment low.

In conclusion, the focus on degrees stems from pay differences, employer expectations and social pressure, but apprenticeships, vocational training and self-directed learning offer valid alternatives. Young people should choose the path that suits their talents and goals rather than assuming that university is the only option.
