Some people believe that children should begin formal lessons, such as reading and writing, at a very young age. I disagree with this view, because early pressure can do more harm than good.

Those in favour argue that young brains absorb information quickly and that an early start gives children an advantage. A child who learns letters at four may enter primary school with confidence and progress faster than classmates. Working parents may also like the idea, since formal pre-school provides supervision while they are at work.

However, I believe the disadvantages are greater. Young children develop through play, and activities such as building, drawing, singing and pretending teach language, coordination and social skills just as effectively as a worksheet does. Forcing a four-year-old to sit still and copy letters can make learning feel like a chore, causing anxiety and an early dislike of school that may last for years. There is also little evidence that an early start produces lasting benefits. In Finland, formal schooling begins at seven, yet Finnish students regularly achieve some of the strongest results in international tests, which suggests that children catch up quickly once they are ready. Moreover, children develop at different speeds, and a rigid early curriculum can make slower learners feel like failures when they are simply not yet ready.

A better approach is to introduce literacy and numeracy gently through stories, games and conversation in the early years, allowing each child to progress naturally. Parents can support this at home by reading together every day.

In conclusion, although an early start may offer a small initial advantage, the pressure it creates can damage motivation. Play-based learning is the more sensible foundation for young children.
