Some people claim that artificial intelligence tutors and language apps teach better than human teachers. I disagree, although I accept that these tools have impressive strengths.

Apps and AI tutors offer clear advantages. They are available at any hour, so a learner can practise during a commute or late at night, and they cost far less than private lessons. They are infinitely patient, allowing students to repeat an exercise or ask the same question many times without embarrassment. Many programs also adapt to a learner's level, selecting exercises that target mistakes, and they can provide instant correction of pronunciation or grammar. For vocabulary drills and daily practice, they can be highly effective, as the popularity of apps like Duolingo suggests.

However, there are important things that human teachers do better. Language is a form of communication, and learners need to practise real conversation with unpredictable responses, body language and humour. A teacher can sense when a student is confused or discouraged and respond with encouragement, a different explanation or a joke, something software still does imperfectly. Teachers also explain cultural context and the reasons behind grammar rules, and they set meaningful goals and maintain motivation, which is the main reason that many app users give up after a few weeks. Moreover, AI systems sometimes produce incorrect or unnatural explanations, and a beginner may not be able to spot the errors.

In my opinion, the best results come from combining the two: apps for regular practice and teachers for guidance, feedback and conversation.

In conclusion, AI tutors and apps are valuable aids, but they do not match the understanding, flexibility and motivation that good human teachers provide, so I disagree with the statement.
