Children today often spend hours on tablets and games consoles rather than playing outside or reading. This essay will examine the problems that result and suggest several practical solutions.

The first problem concerns physical health. Children who sit still for long periods burn fewer calories, and this is linked to obesity, poor posture and disturbed sleep, especially when screens are used late at night. Concentration also suffers: fast, constantly changing games can make slower activities such as reading a book or listening in class seem dull, so schoolwork may decline. In addition, time spent alone with a device can reduce opportunities to practise face-to-face conversation, share toys and resolve disagreements, skills that are vital for friendship. A child who once spent afternoons kicking a ball with neighbours may now play only with strangers online.

There are, however, ways to address the issue. Parents can set clear limits, such as no devices at meals or in bedrooms, and can set an example by putting their own phones away. They should also offer attractive alternatives, from family walks to library visits. Schools can play their part by offering more sport and clubs and by teaching pupils how to use technology in a balanced way. Governments, meanwhile, could require game and app makers to include time reminders and to stop features designed to keep children playing, such as endless rewards. Safe parks and affordable activities in poorer areas would also give children somewhere appealing to go.

In conclusion, excessive screen use harms children's health, attention and social development. Because no single group can solve this alone, parents, schools and governments should work together to restore a healthier balance.
