I'd like to describe the Chorsu Bazaar in Tashkent, which I visited last spring with a visitor from abroad who wanted to see a traditional market. It's one of the oldest and biggest in Central Asia, and I'd been there before, but this time I really noticed how lively it was.

We arrived at about nine o'clock on a Saturday morning. The first thing that hit us was the smell: fresh bread, spices, melons and grilled meat all mixed together. Under the large blue dome in the centre, there were rows of stalls selling dried fruit, nuts and sweets, piled in beautiful colourful pyramids. Outside, there were vegetables, flowers, carpets and clothing. Sellers were calling out to customers, inviting us to taste a piece of apricot or a slice of watermelon, and buyers were haggling cheerfully over the price.

We spent about three hours there. My guest bought a bag of almonds and a hand-painted ceramic bowl, and I tried to bargain for her, though I was clearly not as good as the sellers. We also stopped at a small stall for samsa, fresh from the oven, and it was delicious.

What I liked most was the energy and the friendliness of the people; it felt like the heart of the city. The only thing I disliked was the crowd. It was hot and noisy, and at times we could barely move. But overall, it was a memorable and authentic experience, and I would recommend it to anybody who wants to see real local life.
