It is sometimes proposed that cars should be banned from city centres in order to cut pollution and congestion. I agree with this idea, as long as good alternatives are available.

The environmental and safety benefits of such a ban are substantial. Vehicle exhaust is a leading source of air pollution in cities, contributing to asthma and heart disease, and it also produces carbon emissions. Removing cars would make the air cleaner, reduce noise and make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Cities that have tried this approach, such as Oslo, which has largely cleared its centre of private cars, have found that public spaces become more pleasant and shops often attract more customers on foot. Traffic jams would also ease, saving time for buses and emergency vehicles.

However, a ban does raise problems of access and fairness. Elderly or disabled people may depend on cars to reach shops and clinics, and businesses need deliveries. Shopkeepers sometimes fear losing customers who come by car. These concerns are real, but they can be reduced with sensible planning. Exemptions or special permits could be granted to disabled residents, taxis and delivery vans at set times. Most importantly, the city must first offer frequent, affordable and reliable public transport, together with park-and-ride sites on its edges and safe cycling routes, so that residents truly have a choice.

Without these alternatives, a ban would simply cause hardship and political opposition. With them, it could transform the quality of urban life.

In conclusion, I agree that cars should be banned from city centres because the gains for health, safety and the environment are large, but the policy must be introduced together with exemptions for those in genuine need and with strong public transport.
