It is sometimes claimed that violent films and video games cause young people to commit violent crimes. I disagree with this view, although I accept that such content may have some influence on certain individuals.

Supporters of the claim argue that exposure to violence makes young people less sensitive to it. Teenagers who spend hours playing games in which they shoot opponents may come to view aggression as normal or even enjoyable, and some may imitate what they see. Several high-profile crimes have been linked in the media to perpetrators who played violent games, and psychologists have found that, in the short term, such games can slightly increase aggressive thoughts.

Nevertheless, the idea that violent entertainment directly causes crime is not supported by strong evidence. Millions of young people play violent games or watch action films, and the overwhelming majority never commit a violent act. Over the past decades, game sales have risen sharply in countries such as Japan and the United States, yet violent crime has fallen rather than risen. Much more significant factors include family background, poverty, abuse, mental illness and association with criminal groups. A child who is neglected or who witnesses violence at home is far more at risk than one who simply plays a game. Blaming the media may also distract attention from these real causes and prevent society from addressing them.

That said, parents and regulators have a role in protecting young children. Age ratings should be respected, and parents should monitor what their children watch and talk with them about the difference between fantasy and reality.

In conclusion, violent media may affect some individuals, but there is little proof that it causes crime by itself. Social and personal factors are far more important, so I disagree with the statement.
