Some people believe that advertising for unhealthy food and sugary drinks should be banned completely, especially in media aimed at young people. I agree with a ban in children's media, but I am less convinced that a total prohibition is necessary.

The strongest argument is the protection of children. Young people are far more easily influenced by bright, attractive advertisements than adults, and they do not understand that the purpose is to sell. Research shows that exposure to food adverts increases children's requests for sweets, fast food and soft drinks, and this contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay, which impose costs on health services. Parents find it difficult to resist constant pressure from their children, particularly when characters from cartoons or films are used. The United Kingdom, for example, now restricts adverts for products high in fat, sugar and salt before the evening watershed, and Chile has gone further by banning cartoon characters on unhealthy packaging.

On the other hand, a complete ban raises concerns. Advertising is a legitimate part of free trade, and prohibiting it might reduce company revenue and jobs, as well as limit adults' access to information about products they are free to buy. It is also not certain that bans alone will change diets, because children are influenced by parents, friends and social media, where advertising is harder to regulate. Defining which foods are unhealthy can be complicated, and some products are acceptable in moderation.

In my view, a targeted policy is best. Advertising aimed at children, through television, websites, games and influencers, should be prohibited for unhealthy products, while adult-oriented advertising can be regulated with clear health warnings. This should be combined with education about nutrition at schools and at home.

In conclusion, restricting junk-food advertising to children is justified and effective, but a total ban is unnecessary.
