Some employers use software to monitor their staff's computer use and online activity. I agree that they should be allowed to do so, but only within clear limits.

The main reason is that companies have a legitimate interest in protecting their business. Employees often handle confidential information, such as customer details or financial records, and monitoring can detect data leaks and cyber threats before serious damage occurs. Employers also pay for working time, and software can reveal if staff spend hours on social media or online shopping instead of working. This can help managers to identify problems, to distribute workloads fairly and, in some jobs, to improve safety or customer service. If a bank, for instance, did not monitor its employees' systems, it could not prove compliance with the law.

However, unlimited surveillance would be harmful. Constant observation creates stress, reduces trust and may make staff less creative and productive. Workers have a right to privacy, and checking personal messages or tracking every keystroke goes too far. There is also a risk that data collected about employees could be misused or poorly protected.

For these reasons, monitoring should be permitted only under strict conditions. Employers should inform staff in writing about what is monitored and why, limit the checks to work accounts and security needs, and keep the data safe. Laws, such as the European data protection rules, can require this transparency and give employees the right to challenge excessive surveillance.

In conclusion, employers should be allowed to monitor work-related computer use to protect their business and ensure fairness, as long as the monitoring is proportionate, transparent and respects employees' privacy.
