Lessons in budgeting, understanding interest and comparing prices would give pupils the confidence to make sound decisions. In countries such as Australia, where financial literacy has been introduced into the curriculum, students learn practical tasks like planning a monthly budget, and this can reduce anxiety about money later in life. Not all children have parents who can pass on these skills, so schools help to create a fairer starting point.

Some people raise objections. The school timetable is already crowded, and teachers may not be trained to explain complex topics such as investing. Parents are also an important influence, as children learn attitudes to money at home. These are fair points, but they do not weaken the case. Financial education could replace less useful content, specialists or well-prepared materials could support teachers, and lessons at school would complement, not replace, what families teach. Practical activities, such as running a small class business or managing a pretend budget, would make the subject engaging. Several countries that have tried this approach report that pupils become more careful consumers, which benefits their families too.

In conclusion, financial education prepares young people for adult life and protects them from costly mistakes. I firmly believe schools should include it in their programmes.
