A piece of art that I really like is a painting called The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. I have seen copies of it in books and posters for years, but two summers ago I was lucky enough to see the original at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The painting shows a night sky over a small village. In the centre, there are huge swirling clouds and stars, painted in blue and yellow, and in the foreground, there is a tall, dark cypress tree that rises up almost like a flame. Under the sky, the village looks tiny and peaceful, with a church and a few small houses with lit windows. What surprised me when I saw it in person was how thick the paint was. You can see every brush stroke, and it gives the picture a sense of movement, as if the sky is alive.

There are several reasons why I like it. The first is the colours, which are bright and strong but also harmonious. The second is the emotion. It looks both calm and restless at the same time, and I think it shows the artist's complicated inner world. I read that he painted it while he was in a hospital, and knowing that makes me appreciate it even more. Finally, I like that it is open to interpretation. Some people see hope and wonder, while others see loneliness. Whenever I feel stressed, I look at a picture of it on my phone, and for some reason it helps me feel a connection to something bigger. Standing in front of the real painting was one of the most moving moments of my trip.
