The pie charts compare the sources of funding for one university in 1990 and 2020.
Overall, the university moved from depending mainly on government support to depending mainly on tuition fees. Grants and donations contributed more in 2020, while other income was slightly smaller.
In 1990 government funding accounted for 62% of income, far more than any other source. Tuition fees provided 15%, grants 12%, donations 6% and other sources 5%. By 2020 the picture had changed completely. Government support had fallen to 28%, a decline of 34 percentage points, and tuition fees had become the leading source, at 44%, nearly three times their earlier share.
The two smaller categories of grants and donations both increased modestly. Grants rose from 12% to 15%, and donations from 6% to 9%. Other sources were the only category apart from government funding to decline, slipping from 5% to 4%.
Fees and government support thus swapped positions, with their combined share falling from 77% to 72%, which meant that the university relied slightly more on other income in 2020.
