The first cause is simply overcrowding. Famous sites such as Machu Picchu or the Colosseum receive thousands of visitors a day, and the vibration of so many footsteps, together with humidity from breathing, gradually wears away stone and wall paintings. Second, some tourists behave carelessly. They touch carvings, climb on walls, drop litter or take fragments as souvenirs, often without realising the harm. Finally, in many places the authorities do not enforce strict control, either because they lack staff or because they are reluctant to turn visitors away when tourism provides so much income.
Fortunately, several measures can reduce the damage. Raising ticket prices is another possibility, because the extra revenue can be spent on cleaning, restoration and guards, and higher prices may also discourage casual visitors who come only for a photograph.
