Many historic buildings and cultural sites are suffering because of the huge numbers of people who visit them. This essay will explain the causes of this damage and suggest measures to protect these places.

The first cause is simply overcrowding. Famous sites such as Machu Picchu or the Colosseum receive thousands of visitors a day, and the vibration of so many footsteps, together with humidity from breathing, gradually wears away stone and wall paintings. Second, some tourists behave carelessly. They touch carvings, climb on walls, drop litter or take fragments as souvenirs, often without realising the harm. Finally, in many places the authorities do not enforce strict control, either because they lack staff or because they are reluctant to turn visitors away when tourism provides so much income.

Fortunately, several measures can reduce the damage. The most direct is to limit the number of visitors allowed in each day, as has been done at Machu Picchu, where tickets are issued for specific time slots. Raising ticket prices is another possibility, because the extra revenue can be spent on cleaning, restoration and guards, and higher prices may also discourage casual visitors who come only for a photograph. In addition, visitors should be educated before and during their visit. Clear signs, short films at the entrance and guided tours that explain why the site is fragile would encourage respect. Penalties for vandalism, such as fines or bans, could back this up.

In conclusion, cultural sites are being harmed by crowds, careless behaviour and weak management. By limiting numbers, charging fairer prices to fund upkeep and teaching visitors how to behave, countries can preserve these treasures for future generations.
