Private companies have begun to sell holidays in space to very wealthy customers. I think this is a mainly negative development, although it may bring some limited benefits.

Supporters argue that space tourism could advance technology and science. Companies competing for customers invest heavily in reusable rockets and safer spacecraft, which lowers the cost of launches for scientific missions and satellites as well. Tourists' fees also pay for research that governments might not fund, and in the long term, if prices fall, more people might experience space and gain a new view of the fragility of the planet, as many astronauts report. Some say it could inspire young people to study science and engineering.

Nevertheless, the drawbacks are more persuasive. A single rocket launch releases large quantities of carbon dioxide and soot into the upper atmosphere, and for a few minutes of experience per passenger, the environmental cost is enormous at a time when the world is trying to reduce emissions. The money involved is also hard to justify when millions of people lack clean water, food or healthcare; spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a short flight for the rich highlights global inequality. Furthermore, it benefits only a tiny minority, and the trips are risky, so an accident could damage the reputation of the whole space industry and divert public money to investigations or rescue.

Public attitudes may also be affected, as ordinary people may resent a pastime reserved for billionaires while they are asked to reduce their own carbon footprint. If the industry does grow, governments should regulate its emissions, require safety standards and tax the profits to fund scientific research or environmental projects.

In conclusion, space tourism may stimulate innovation, but its environmental harm, high cost and social inequality outweigh these gains, so I consider it more negative than positive.
