Some teachers argue that homework should be banned for primary and secondary students because it creates unnecessary pressure. I partly disagree: although excessive homework is harmful, a moderate amount is beneficial, so limits are a better answer than a ban.

There are good reasons to be concerned. Many students spend hours each evening on assignments after a full day at school, leaving little time for sleep, exercise, family or hobbies, and this can cause stress and tiredness. Homework can also be unfair, since children with quiet rooms, internet access and parents who can help have a clear advantage over those without such support. Finland, which gives relatively little homework, still achieves excellent educational results, which suggests that long assignments are not necessary for success.

Even so, moderate homework has real value. It gives pupils the chance to practise what they have learned in class and to revise at their own speed, which helps to fix knowledge in memory. It also teaches responsibility, time management and independent study, skills that are essential at university and work. For younger children, short tasks such as reading for twenty minutes can build good habits and involve parents in their education. Without any homework, the pace of classroom teaching would need to slow down to allow for all practice, which might reduce what can be covered.

The solution is to regulate rather than abolish. Schools could set clear time limits for each age group, coordinate between teachers to avoid overload and offer homework clubs for pupils who lack support at home.

In conclusion, a ban would remove a useful learning tool, so I believe sensible limits are the best way to protect both wellbeing and achievement.
