Some time ago, I tried listening to an audiobook for the first time. It was a popular self-development book, and I downloaded it from an app after a friend told me that it was the best way to read when you don't have time to sit down with a book.

I listened to it during my daily commute, which takes about fifty minutes each way, and also when I was cleaning the flat or cooking. The book was about eight hours long, narrated by the author himself, and I finished it in less than two weeks. The narrator had a pleasant, calm voice and used pauses well, which made the ideas easier to follow than I'd expected. I could also change the speed, so I increased it slightly when the content was easy.

Compared with a printed book, there were some clear differences. The biggest advantage was that I could multitask: I could keep my hands and eyes busy with something else and still take in the content. It's also lightweight, since my whole library is on my phone. On the other hand, I found it easier to lose concentration. If my mind wandered for a few seconds, I had missed an entire section and had to go back. And I missed the pleasure of holding a book, underlining sentences and seeing how far I had got.

I would definitely use audiobooks again, especially for non-fiction or when I'm travelling. But for novels, and any book I want to study carefully, I'd still prefer the printed version.

Part 3

  1. Do you think e-books will eventually replace printed books?
  2. What are the advantages of audiobooks for busy people?
  3. Is reading on a screen more tiring than reading on paper?
  4. Will libraries still be necessary in the future?
  5. Do children learn better from printed books or from tablets?
