I'd like to describe a talk I attended about eight months ago, given by a young entrepreneur who had started a successful technology company. It was organised by my university's business club, and I went along with a classmate, mainly because I was thinking about starting my own project one day.

The talk took place on a Wednesday evening in the main lecture hall, which was almost completely full. The speaker, a man in his early thirties, began by telling us about his failures rather than his successes. He explained that his first two businesses had collapsed within a year, and he had lost almost all his savings. Then he described what he had learned: how to listen to customers, how to build a good team, and why you should never be afraid to change your plan. He used simple language and funny stories, so the hour went by very quickly. At the end, there was a question session, and I asked how he stayed motivated after failing, and his answer was surprisingly honest.

I found it interesting for several reasons. First, he was open and didn't try to look perfect, which made him easy to relate to. Second, the advice was practical rather than just theory. And finally, the talk changed my attitude to failure. I used to think it meant you were not good enough, but now I see it as a normal step towards success. I wrote nearly three pages of notes, and I still read them from time to time.
