What your overview should say

An overview names the main trends or differences in one or two sentences, without numbers. These are the features a strong answer picks out:

  1. 1Overall, English's share of web content collapsed while Chinese and other languages expanded.
  2. 2English fell from 68% to 26%, whereas Chinese rose fourfold from 5% to 20%.
  3. 3Spanish and Russian also grew, to 8% and 7%, and the 'other' category nearly doubled from 21% to 39%.

The pie charts compare the share of internet content written in five language categories in 2000 and 2020.

Overall, English lost its overwhelming dominance, while Chinese and the other languages gained a far larger share. The web became much more linguistically diverse over the twenty years.

In 2000 English accounted for 68% of web content, which was far ahead of the next named language, Chinese, at 5%. Spanish had 4% and Russian only 2%, while the other languages combined made up 21%. By 2020, however, English had fallen dramatically to 26%, a drop of 42 percentage points, though it remained the largest single language.

Chinese showed the most remarkable growth, rising from 5% to 20% and closing in on English as the second-largest named language. Spanish doubled its share, from 4% to 8%, and Russian more than tripled its share, from 2% to 7%, although both remained minor languages, with a combined 15% of content.

The other category also increased significantly, from 21% to 39%. In 2020 this group therefore accounted for more content than English.
