After a long period of exam-focused schooling, a break can also restore energy and motivation, and many students return with a clearer idea of what they want to study. In conclusion, a gap year can bring maturity, motivation and useful experience, and with planning its disadvantages can be avoided, so I think it is generally beneficial.
