I'd like to describe a time when I was stuck in a terrible traffic jam on the way back from a family trip, last summer. We had spent a weekend at my uncle's house in the countryside, and we left on Sunday afternoon, together with what seemed like half of the city's population.
Everything went well for the first hour. Then, about forty kilometres from the city, the cars in front of us began slowing down and eventually stopped. It turned out that there had been a small accident, and the police were directing traffic into one lane. We moved forward a few metres every few minutes. In the end, it took us nearly four hours to cover a distance that normally takes less than an hour.
We tried to make the best of it. My father put on some music, and my sister and I played word games and shared the snacks we had left. At one point, we turned off the engine and got out of the car to stretch our legs, because nobody was moving at all. Other drivers did the same, and I even saw people playing cards on the road. The mood was surprisingly friendly.
At first, I felt annoyed and impatient, because I had work the next morning. But after an hour or so, I accepted it, and honestly, it turned into a nice family moment. Still, the experience made me think about how inefficient our roads are. It's a good example of why more people should use public transport, especially trains, for long journeys.
Nelere dikkat etmeli
