Some people regard watching sport as a waste of time and believe that everyone should take part instead. I disagree with this view to a large extent, although I accept that playing has clear advantages.

The case against spectating is based on health. Participation improves fitness, strengthens the heart and helps to control weight, whereas sitting for hours in front of a screen does the reverse. Critics also argue that watching sport replaces exercise, particularly for those who spend entire weekends on the sofa following matches, and that the huge sums spent on tickets and subscriptions could be better used on other things, such as community facilities.

Nevertheless, I think this view is too negative. For many people, being a fan is a source of joy and belonging. Supporters who attend matches share excitement, songs and emotion with thousands of strangers, and following a team can bring families, friends and neighbourhoods together. It is also a relaxing form of entertainment, which helps people to switch off from the pressures of work. More importantly, watching can inspire people to play. After a major tournament such as the Olympics or Wimbledon, sports clubs often report a surge in new members, and children copy their heroes in the park. Elite sport therefore acts as motivation for millions.

Although watching cannot replace physical activity, the two are not in competition. Most fans can do both, for example by playing at weekends and following professional matches in the evening. The real problem is inactivity, not spectating, and it is better addressed by encouraging people to exercise than by condemning their entertainment.

In conclusion, playing is better for physical health, but watching sport has social and emotional value and often encourages participation, so it cannot fairly be called a waste of time.
