It is sometimes claimed that organic food is healthier and kinder to the environment, so governments should require farmers to grow only organic produce. I agree that organic farming has real benefits, but I disagree that it should be made compulsory.

There are good arguments for organic methods. Because farmers avoid artificial fertilisers and pesticides, the soil stays healthier, rivers are less polluted and wildlife such as bees and birds is better protected. Consumers also like the idea of eating food with fewer chemical residues, and some people feel that organic fruit and vegetables taste better. For these reasons, there is a case for governments to encourage the sector through grants and training.

However, forcing all farmers to adopt organic techniques would cause serious problems. Yields from organic farms are generally lower, so more land is needed to produce the same amount of food, and this could mean cutting down forests. With the world population still growing, a switch to organic farming alone might lead to shortages and rising prices, which would hit poor families hardest. Organic products already cost considerably more in the shops, and many households cannot afford them. In addition, scientific evidence on the health benefits is mixed; several large studies have found little difference in nutritional value between organic and conventional food, so the claim of better health is not fully proven.

A more reasonable policy would be to support organic agriculture where it is practical and to reduce harmful chemicals in conventional farming through stricter regulation. This allows consumers to choose while keeping food affordable and plentiful.

In conclusion, organic food offers environmental advantages, but the lower productivity and higher cost mean that governments should encourage rather than require it.
