Supporters of road building argue that new motorways and bypasses make journeys faster and keep goods moving. Businesses rely on lorries to deliver products, and in sparsely populated regions a good road may be the only realistic link to jobs and hospitals. Private cars also give people flexibility that no timetable can match, so many drivers feel they are the ones who pay most in fuel tax and should benefit from the spending.

Nevertheless, the long-term evidence favours public transport. Wider roads tend to attract more traffic, so congestion returns within a few years, a pattern seen on many expanding motorways around Los Angeles. A single metro line, by contrast, can carry as many passengers as several lanes of cars while taking up much less space. Public transport is also cleaner, which helps governments meet their emission targets, and it is cheaper for low-income families who cannot afford to own a car. Cities such as Singapore have shown that reliable, affordable trains and buses persuade many people to leave their cars at home, which in turn makes the remaining roads less crowded.

That said, roads should not be neglected altogether. Existing surfaces need repair, and rural areas may still require new links. The sensible approach is to maintain what exists and direct most new funding towards public transport.

In conclusion, although road building has some benefits, investment in public transport offers a more sustainable and fairer solution to congestion and pollution, and I believe it should be the government's priority.
