Some people believe governments should ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars within ten years and promote electric vehicles instead. I agree with the principle, but I think a ten-year deadline is only realistic if governments prepare thoroughly.

The environmental case is strong. Petrol and diesel engines produce carbon dioxide and local pollutants that harm health, especially in cities, whereas electric vehicles have no exhaust emissions and are much quieter. Even when the electricity used to charge them comes from mixed sources, they usually produce fewer emissions over their lifetime, and this advantage grows as grids become cleaner. Running costs are also lower, since electricity is cheaper than fuel and electric motors need less maintenance. A firm date would give manufacturers certainty and speed up investment, as Norway has shown: its policies have made electric cars the majority of new sales.

However, there are practical obstacles. Many places lack enough public charging points, and people living in flats cannot easily charge at home. Electric vehicles are still more expensive to buy than equivalent petrol cars, which could put them out of reach of low-income families, and battery production requires mining of metals that causes environmental and social harm. If power stations rely mainly on coal, the benefit is reduced, and grids may struggle with a sudden rise in demand.

These problems are solvable. Governments can finance charging networks, offer subsidies or tax breaks for buyers, support recycling of batteries and invest in renewable electricity at the same pace. A ban should also leave scope for used petrol cars to remain on the road.

In conclusion, phasing out new fossil-fuel cars is a sound goal for the climate and public health, and I agree with it, provided that infrastructure and affordability are addressed first.
