The pie charts compare where residents of one country went on holiday in 2000 and 2020.
Overall, holidays at home became less popular, while trips to Asia and the Americas increased. Domestic holidays remained the single most popular choice in both years, although their lead narrowed considerably.
In 2000 just over half of all holidays, 52%, were taken within the country, while Europe accounted for 30% of trips. Asia (8%), the Americas (6%) and other destinations (4%) were all minor choices. By 2020 the domestic share had fallen by 17 percentage points to 35%, and Europe had declined slightly, to 25%.
Asia showed the most dramatic change, rising from 8% to 22% and almost tripling its share. This widened its lead over the Americas and brought it close to Europe, which remained the most popular overseas region in both years. The Americas also grew, from 6% to 10%, and the share of other destinations doubled, from 4% to 8%.
Taken together, holidays abroad accounted for 48% of the total in 2000 and 65% in 2020.
