In many countries, fewer young people are choosing to study science and engineering at university. This essay will discuss the causes of this trend and suggest some solutions.

Several factors explain the decline. Science subjects are often seen as difficult and demanding, requiring more hours of study than many alternatives, so students may choose easier courses with a higher chance of good grades. School lessons can be dull when they emphasise memorising facts instead of experimenting, and a shortage of qualified science teachers and laboratory equipment in many schools makes this worse. Young people may also believe that careers in science are poorly paid or less glamorous than jobs in business, media or technology start-ups, and a lack of visible role models, especially for girls, discourages some from trying. In addition, university fees make students think carefully about which degree will bring the fastest financial return.

To reverse the trend, schools should make science more practical and engaging through experiments, field trips, coding clubs and competitions, and train and retain teachers by offering better salaries. Governments could provide scholarships or reduced fees for science and engineering students and fund science museums and public campaigns showing the exciting work done in the field. Universities and companies can build partnerships to offer internships, mentoring and visits by scientists to schools, so that students see real careers. Finally, promoting diverse role models, such as women engineers, would help to challenge stereotypes and widen participation. Several countries, including South Korea, have encouraged young people with such programmes.

In conclusion, declining interest in science stems from perceived difficulty, uninspiring teaching and doubts about careers, but improved teaching, financial support and visible role models could encourage many more young people to choose scientific subjects.
