Some people believe that the retirement age should be raised because people now live longer and stay healthier. I agree to some extent, although I think flexibility is more important than a fixed higher age.

The economic argument is strong. In many countries the number of pensioners is growing while the number of workers is falling, so the taxes of fewer people must pay for more retirees. Raising the age would reduce the pressure on pension funds and healthcare budgets and keep experienced employees in the workforce, where their skills are valuable. Many older people also want to continue working, as it gives them purpose and social contact. In Germany and Denmark, for instance, the retirement age has been gradually increased to take account of longer life expectancy.

However, a general increase raises fairness issues. People in physically demanding jobs, such as builders or miners, may be unable to continue into their late sixties, and those who started working young have already contributed for decades. Life expectancy also differs between rich and poor, so lower-income workers could enjoy fewer years of retirement than wealthier colleagues. In addition, if older workers stay in post, young people may find it harder to get promotion or their first job, although the evidence for this is mixed.

For these reasons, I believe the best policy is a flexible system. The standard age could rise slowly, but workers in strenuous occupations should be able to retire earlier, while others could choose part-time work, phased retirement or higher pensions in return for working longer. This would respect individual health and circumstances.

In conclusion, raising the retirement age can help to keep pension systems affordable, but a flexible approach would be fairer and more realistic than a single higher limit for everyone.
