Some people believe that voting in national elections should be compulsory for all adult citizens. I agree with this idea, as it strengthens democracy more than it restricts freedom.

The main argument is legitimacy. When only half of the population votes, the winning party may represent a minority of citizens, and the result may reflect the views of the most motivated groups rather than the country as a whole. Compulsory voting ensures that governments are chosen by almost everyone, giving them stronger authority. It also encourages fairness, because groups that traditionally vote less, such as young people and low-income workers, are included, and politicians must therefore consider their needs in policies. In Australia, where voting has been compulsory for a century, turnout is around ninety per cent, and parties campaign on issues that matter to a broad range of voters rather than concentrating on mobilising their own supporters. Compulsion can also make citizens take more interest in politics, since they must at least learn about the candidates in order to decide.

Critics argue that forcing people to vote violates personal freedom, and that unwilling or uninformed voters may choose carelessly or at random, damaging the quality of results. These concerns have some force. However, the obligation is small, as it involves only a few minutes every few years, and it is comparable to other civic duties, such as paying taxes or serving on a jury. Allowing voters to select a "none of the above" option or to submit a blank ballot respects their right to protest, and the fine for not voting can be modest, with exceptions for illness or travel.

In conclusion, compulsory voting produces governments with a clearer mandate and encourages broader participation, and I believe these benefits outweigh the limitation on individual choice.
