Some governments restrict the information that can be seen on the internet in their country. In my opinion, the disadvantages of this practice outweigh the advantages, although limited controls can be justified.

The main advantage is protection. The internet contains material that is harmful, such as child abuse images, terrorist propaganda and fraud, and governments have a duty to prevent it from spreading. Blocking such content can protect children and vulnerable people, reduce crime and help maintain public order. Restrictions may also limit the spread of dangerous false information during emergencies, for example misleading medical advice. Some governments argue that they are preserving cultural or moral values.

Nevertheless, broad censorship brings significant disadvantages. The first is the loss of freedom of expression. Citizens who cannot read independent news or discuss political issues online cannot hold their rulers accountable, and censorship is often used to silence criticism rather than to protect the public. The decision about what is harmful is made by officials who may serve their own interests, and there is rarely a way to challenge their choices. Restricting information also harms education and the economy: students and researchers lose access to knowledge, and businesses cannot use global platforms to learn and sell. Moreover, it often fails in practice, since determined users bypass the blocks with technology such as virtual private networks. Trust between citizens and the state is damaged when people feel they are being kept in ignorance.

A better approach is to target clearly illegal content through transparent laws and independent courts, while allowing open access to everything else, and to educate users about how to evaluate what they read.

In conclusion, restricting illegal and dangerous material is justified, but wide-ranging censorship harms freedom, learning and trust, so I believe its disadvantages are greater.
