Band 8 sample answer

250 words · about 2 minutes at a natural pace · Phrases from the vocabulary list are highlighted.

I'd like to talk about a traditional dance performance I watched in Samarkand last summer, while I was showing my cousin from Moscow around the city. We'd heard that there was an evening show in a restored building near the Registan, so we bought tickets and went.

The hall wasn't huge, so we could see the performers up close. The show was about ninety minutes long, and it included dances from different regions of Uzbekistan, each with its own costumes and music. The women wore long, bright silk dresses with delicate gold embroidery, and the men wore embroidered robes and hats. A small band of musicians played traditional instruments, like the doira, a kind of drum, and the dutar, which is a stringed instrument. One dance, in particular, stayed with me. A girl performed a solo with incredibly slow, graceful hand movements, and the whole audience was silent until she finished. Then everybody stood and applauded.

I learned quite a lot from the evening. Before, I had only a general idea of these dances, but a presenter explained what each movement represented, such as the harvest, a wedding or friendship between neighbours. I realised how much history is contained in them.

It also made me proud of my cultural heritage. My cousin, who had never seen anything like it, kept saying how beautiful it was. I think such performances are important because they pass on traditions in an enjoyable way, and I'd like to see more young people attending them.

What to notice

  • It takes the points on the card in order, so the examiner can follow it.
  • Each point gets a specific detail or a short story, which is what keeps a talk going for two minutes.
  • The "explain" line at the end gets the most time, because that is where you give an opinion and show your range of language.

We wrote this answer for practice; it does not come from IELTS. Take its structure and phrases and tell your own story, because examiners notice memorised answers.

Frequently asked questions

How should I describe an event in an IELTS cue card?

Set the scene with when, where and who was there, then walk through what happened in order. Finish with why it was memorable. If you were not at a big event, a small one you remember well works better.
