The piece of sports equipment I'd like to describe is my badminton racket. I have had it for about three years, and it is one of the few things I'd call a real investment in my hobby. It's a lightweight black and red racket with a carbon frame, and it came in a padded case.
I play badminton twice a week with a group of friends from university. We rent a hall near the campus, usually on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, and we play singles and doubles for around two hours. Before I bought this racket, I used a cheap one that I borrowed from my cousin, but it was heavy, and the strings kept breaking. When I decided to take the sport more seriously, I did some research and visited a sports shop where a trainer helped me to choose the right weight and balance. It cost about seventy dollars, which was a significant sum for me at that time.
It matters to my game for several reasons. A good racket lets you hit the shuttlecock harder and with more control. With my old racket, I used to miss many shots, whereas this one responds quickly, and it has helped me improve my technique. It's also comfortable to hold, so I don't get tired or get blisters as quickly. And, to be honest, having decent equipment motivates me to play and practise. I take good care of it, restring it twice a year and keep it in its case so that the frame doesn't get damaged. I think it will last for many more years, and I hope to keep playing for a long time.
What to notice
- It takes the points on the card in order, so the examiner can follow it.
- Each point gets a specific detail or a short story, which is what keeps a talk going for two minutes.
- The "explain" line at the end gets the most time, because that is where you give an opinion and show your range of language.

Frequently asked questions
How should I describe an object in an IELTS cue card?
Say what it is and how you got it, then talk about how you use it and one moment when it mattered. Objects run out of description fast, so the story around the object is what fills the two minutes.
