IELTS recommends that your result counts as proof of your English for two years from your test date. That is the short answer, but it is not the whole rule. In IELTS's own words, organisations "can choose to accept results for a longer period", and some count the two years to a date you might not expect: the day you apply, the day you submit a second form, or the day they assess your file.
This guide gives you the official IELTS position, the rules that the UK, Canadian and Australian governments publish, a timeline from test day to month 36 and a table of what to do when your result is about to run out. Every rule is quoted from an official page and linked, checked 28 September 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the organisation you apply to before you book or send anything.
What IELTS officially says about validity
| Question | Official answer | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| How long is a result valid? | "valid for two years after a test has been taken" (ielts.org) | Count from the test date on your Test Report Form, not from the day results arrived |
| Who decides? | Organisations "can choose to accept results for a longer period" (ielts.org) | The university, visa office or regulator sets your real limit |
| Can an older result still be used? | Only "if it is accompanied by proof" that you kept up or improved your English (ielts.org) | Some organisations may accept it with evidence. Ask before you rely on it |
| Can I renew or extend it? | "There is no official IELTS renewal process" (IDP) | A new result means a new test |
| Do paper results still count? | They "will remain valid until the end of the recommended two-year period" (ielts.org) | The move to computer-only IELTS does not shorten them |
Why two years? IELTS bases the limit on "second-language loss": English you don't use tends to fade. An IELTS research review from 2023 found that the two-year period is "overwhelmingly the norm, with only a few exceptions". The recommendation is the same for IELTS Academic and General Training. So plan for two years, and treat anything longer as an exception you confirm in writing.
How organisations check your result
Organisations check your result in the IELTS Results Service, where they look up a result by its Test Report Form number. IELTS describes two separate things here:
- Checking that a report is genuine. "You can verify a Test Report Form older than two years": the service shows reports "for the maximum amount of time possible" under data protection law (ielts.org). There is no single cut-off date, so an organisation that needs to check an old report should confirm it can still see it.
- Looking into a report further. IELTS says it "cannot further investigate" reports that are more than three years old (ielts.org).
Neither rule decides whether your result is accepted. A report the service can still show may be too old for the organisation, and only the organisation's own limit answers that.
Sending your results is easiest inside the two years. IDP lists these as things you can do within that period: send your report by post to up to 5 organisations free of charge, and share it by e-delivery with as many as you like (IDP). If your test centre has closed, ielts.org says the additional report service is "available for up to two years" from your test date, at a cost. How to send results step by step: our IELTS results guide.
Practical rule: arrange delivery early, but make sure the result also meets each organisation's age limit at its own check date. Sending it early does not keep it valid.
Find your check date: by destination and purpose
The two years are only a guide. What decides is the date your organisation checks and the age limit it applies on that date. Work it out in four steps:
- Name your destination and purpose: which university, which visa route or subclass, which professional register.
- Find the check date on that organisation's own page: when you apply, when you are invited, when you submit, when they assess your file, or when you enrol.
- Find the age limit on that date: 2 years, 3 years, 12 months or something else. If there is also a fixed end date for older tests, the earlier limit wins.
- Count from your test date and leave time for processing. If the result runs out before the check date, plan a new test now.
| Destination and purpose | The date they check | Age limit and where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| University admission | Set by each university: often when you apply, sometimes when you enrol | The university's English requirements page or admissions office |
| UK visa that needs a new SELT | Your visa application date | Awarded "in the two years before the date of your application" (gov.uk) |
| UK settlement or citizenship | Not always a fixed age: an expired result can count if it meets the reuse conditions | An expired B1 to C2 result may still count if it was accepted in an earlier UK application (gov.uk) |
| Canada, Express Entry | When you complete your profile and when you submit your PR application | "Less than 2 years old" at both points (IRCC) |
| Australia visa | Depends on the subclass. Subclass 189 checks competent English "at the time of invitation" | Depends on the subclass: check its eligibility page (Home Affairs) |
| UK nursing register (NMC) | When they assess your complete application, not when you apply | Taken "in the two years prior" to that (NMC) |
United Kingdom
If your UK visa route requires you to prove English with a new Secure English Language Test (SELT), for IELTS that means IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, and gov.uk says "Test results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded". Not every route needs a new test:
- Settlement: a B1 to C2 qualification that has run out may still be used if "it's on the current list of recognised tests" and "it was accepted for another UK immigration application" (gov.uk).
- Citizenship: an expired qualification may be used if it "was accepted when you settled in the UK" (gov.uk).
- Degree-level study: your university can assess your English itself, so its own rule on test age applies.
UKVI accepts One Skill Retake in selected locations, so check your venue. Which routes need which test: IELTS for UKVI vs Academic.
Canada
For Express Entry, IRCC accepts only IELTS General Training (how it differs from Academic), and its page says: "We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry" (IRCC, modified 22 June 2026). The two checkpoints are the trap. A result that was fine when you made your profile can be more than 2 years old by the time you are invited and submit your application.
Australia
Home Affairs changed its approved tests on 7 August 2025. For newer tests it lists IELTS Academic and General Training taken at a secure test centre, including One Skill Retake, which it accepts "for eligible visas". It does not accept IELTS Online.
How old your result may be, and when it is checked, depends on the visa:
- The competent English page asks for scores "in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the visa subclass".
- The functional English page asks for scores "in the 12 months before your visa application".
- Some visas check at another point: for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), "At the time of invitation, you must have at least competent English" (Home Affairs).
- Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 "may be used as evidence of English proficiency for visa purposes until 6 August 2028, inclusive", depending on the visa. This end date does not stretch a result past your visa's own age limit.
Before you rely on any of these, open the eligibility page of your visa subclass, including for student visas, and check three things: the accepted tests, the age limit and the check date.
Timeline: from test day to the end of validity
Most deadlines around an IELTS result are counted from one date: your test day. Here is how they line up.
| When | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Test day. This date is on your Test Report Form | Note it: every clock below starts here |
| Usually day 1 to 2 | Results for IELTS on computer (ielts.org) | Check your name and scores: see when results come and how to check them |
| By week 6 | Last day to request a remark | See when a remark is worth it |
| By day 60 | Last day to sit a One Skill Retake | The new report keeps the day 0 date |
| Month 12 | Australia: limit for functional English, where the visa uses it | Check your subclass page |
| Month 24 | IELTS recommended limit. UK visa with a new SELT, Express Entry, NMC | Make sure each check date falls before this |
| Month 36 | Australia: limit for competent English or higher on visas that allow 3 years. IELTS no longer investigates reports | After this, plan on a new test |
Where paper-based IELTS is still offered, results take up to 13 days.
One Skill Retake doesn't reset the clock
A One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you resit one skill within 60 days of a full IELTS on computer test. It can fix a low score, but it cannot make your result last longer. In a webinar for organisations, IELTS explains that the date at the top of an OSR report is "the date of the original four skills IELTS", and asks them to take this into account for validity.
Two more checks before you choose OSR:
- Is OSR accepted where you apply? Canada's Express Entry and the NMC don't accept it. Australia's Home Affairs accepts it for eligible visas.
- How long must the result last? If you need it for more than 2 years from your original test, a full new test gives you a new start date.
The full rules, and how to choose between OSR and a full retake, are in our One Skill Retake guide.
Practice: does the result still count?
Three people, three plans. Decide for each one whether the result will count, then scroll for the answers.
- Aliya is applying for a UK visa route that requires a new SELT, and no exception applies to her. Her IELTS for UKVI result was awarded on 22 October 2024. She plans to apply on 5 November 2026.
- Timur took IELTS General Training on 1 December 2024. He creates his Express Entry profile in October 2026 and expects to submit his PR application in January 2027.
- Dilnoza took IELTS Academic at a test centre on 10 July 2025. She will apply in March 2028 for an Australian visa that needs competent English, checks it on the application date and accepts results from the 3 years before the application.
| Person | Counts? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aliya | No | 5 November 2026 is more than 2 years after 22 October 2024, so on this route she needs a new SELT before she applies |
| Timur | Only for the profile | In October 2026 the result is 22 months old. By January 2027 it is 25 months old, so he needs a new test before he submits |
| Dilnoza | Yes, on these dates | March 2028 is within 3 years of 10 July 2025. The 6 August 2028 end date for older tests does not extend her result beyond the visa's 3-year limit |
Timur's case is the one people miss: if your result will pass 2 years before your likely submission date, book the new test now, while there is time for a second attempt.
What to do when your result is about to expire
Find your situation, then act before the check date you found above.
| Your situation | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| University application, result under 2 years old | Apply now, and ask if the limit is checked when you apply or when you enrol | Each university sets its own rule |
| University application, result over 2 years old | Ask if they accept older results with proof of recent English study or work. If not, book a new test | IELTS advises accepting older results only with proof |
| UK visa, settlement or citizenship | First check if your route lets you reuse an earlier accepted result. If it needs a new SELT, apply within 2 years of the award date or book IELTS for UKVI | Rules differ by route |
| Canada, Express Entry | If the result will pass 2 years before you could submit, retake General Training now | Both profile and application must be under 2 years |
| Australia visa | Check the accepted tests, age limit and check date on your subclass page | Home Affairs sets them per visa subclass |
| Professional registration | Count to the date they assess your file and allow for processing | The NMC, for example, counts to its assessment date |
| Several applications ahead | Arrange delivery early, and check each organisation's age limit at its own check date | Sending early does not keep a result valid |
Will a new test give you the same score?
If you retake because your result expired, don't assume you will get the same score again. IELTS itself notes that results "can vary from test to test for the same skill". Mock exam data shows the same: we compared the first two full mock exams of 345 learners on GoPrep, taken within 28 July to 26 September 2026, different tests each time and half of them 4 days apart or less.
| Second mock vs first | Learners | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Same overall band | 92 | 27% |
| Higher | 147 | 43% |
| Lower | 106 | 31% |
| Within half a band either way | 251 | 73% |
Rounded shares may not add up to 100%. A mock taken days later is not a real retake years later, and these figures don't show why scores changed.
What this means for you: if your requirement is the same as your old score, or close to it, plan time for a second attempt (see how long it takes to improve your IELTS score), and take a full practice test before you book to see where you are now.

FAQ
Is IELTS valid for 3 years?
IELTS recommends two years, but organisations can accept older results. For example, Australia's Home Affairs asks for competent English scores from the 3 years before the visa application, depending on the visa subclass, so check your subclass page.
Can I extend or renew my IELTS score?
No. IDP says there is no official IELTS renewal process and a Test Report Form cannot be extended. If an organisation needs a newer result, you take the test again.
Is IELTS validity counted from the test date or the result date?
IELTS counts from the test date: it recommends treating results as valid for two years after the test has been taken. UK visa rules refer to the date the test was awarded, so leave yourself a margin when you are close to the limit.
Does One Skill Retake extend my IELTS validity?
No. The date at the top of a One Skill Retake report is the date of your original full test, so the validity period is still counted from that date.
Next step
If your result runs out before your application, your new test date is your new deadline. Tell the quiz your target score, your exam date and the part of IELTS you find hardest, and GoPrep will build a personal study plan around your answers.
