If a UK visa or citizenship application asks you for a Secure English Language Test (SELT), book IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, not standard IELTS. Inside the test room nothing changes: IDP says IELTS for UKVI Academic "is the same as the Academic test in terms of content, format, scoring and the level of difficulty". What changes is where you sit it and the result you get: only a centre approved by the UK Home Office can run it, and standard IELTS is not a SELT.
UK rules below are quoted from gov.uk and the IELTS partners' pages, checked 29 September 2026; prices come from our country guides, checked 28 September 2026.
Which IELTS do you need? 4 questions
- Does your route ask for a SELT? Open the English page of your visa route on gov.uk. Degree-level students: ask the university (question below).
- Can you reuse earlier proof? Many routes accept a UK degree, a degree taught in English (confirmed by Ecctis) or English you proved in an earlier successful visa application.
- Which skills and level? All four skills means IELTS for UKVI with a minimum band in each part. Speaking and listening only means Life Skills, the test made for those routes.
- Which module? The British Council points UKVI Academic at "undergraduate or postgraduate study" and General Training at "work, training or study below degree level". If your sponsor or college names one, follow them. How the two modules differ: IELTS Academic vs General Training.
For a degree course, send your university this before you book:
I have an offer for [course] starting [month]. For my Student visa, will you assess my English yourselves, or do I need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UKVI? If you assess it, do you accept standard IELTS Academic, and what minimum band do you need overall and in each part?
The usual answers, from ielts.org's summary of UK visa rules, which says to confirm them on gov.uk:
| Your purpose | Test to book | Level or score |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's or master's degree in the UK, Student visa | Ask the university: standard IELTS Academic, or IELTS for UKVI Academic if it asks for a SELT | Equivalent to B2; the university sets the band |
| UK course below degree level (foundation, college), Student visa | IELTS for UKVI | B1: 4.0 in each of the 4 parts |
| Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Scale-up, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder: new application | IELTS for UKVI, unless you prove English another way | B2: 5.5 in each of the 4 parts |
| Partner or parent (family) visa | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills, made for this; an approved higher-level test also counts | A1 first application, A2 extension, B1 settlement |
| Settlement (indefinite leave to remain) or British citizenship | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 | Pass |
| University, visa or job outside the UK | Standard IELTS Academic or General Training | Set by the organisation |
B2 is for new applications. If you already hold a work visa, gov.uk sets different rules:
- Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker: "If you had this visa before 8 January 2026 and you're applying to extend or update it, you need level B1 English. You do not need to prove your knowledge of English again." Switching between these two visas needs no new proof either.
- Scale-up Worker: if you had it before 8 January 2026 and are extending it, "you only need level B1 English. You do not need to provide proof again or meet level B2."
- High Potential Individual and Innovator Founder: B2. On all five routes, English proved "in a previous successful visa application" may not need proving again.
What makes IELTS for UKVI different
Is IELTS for UKVI harder? No. The British Council says the Academic and General Training versions are "the same design, format and difficulty as standard IELTS tests". UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI centre, "as UKVI requires an additional layer of security".
| What | Standard IELTS | IELTS for UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Questions, timing, marking | Academic or General Training | The same |
| Where you sit it | Any IELTS test centre | A centre approved by the UK Home Office |
| Format | Computer; Writing on Paper in some countries; IELTS Online for Academic | Computer at the centre only: no Writing on Paper, no IELTS Online |
| Result form | Standard Test Report Form | Includes UKVI details, including the UKVI number for your application |
| Counts where the UK asks for a SELT | No | Yes |
The result form matters: gov.uk says the SELT reference number "you must use when making your application" is shown on IELTS results as the "UKVI number". Without it, your application may be refused.
IELTS Life Skills: A1, A2 and B1
ielts.org describes Life Skills as a speaking and listening test for family, settlement and citizenship applications:
- One short session. With an examiner and another candidate, 16 to 22 minutes: you listen to a recording, then answer questions and talk about it.
- Everyday topics, such as family, work and transport. No essays, no reading.
- Pass or Fail, no band score. After a Fail, you retake and pay again (British Council).
- Results: within 7 days (British Council) or up to 9 days (ielts.org).
- Levels A1, A2 and B1. The British Council lists A2 as "only available in the UK", and the Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan price lists show A1 or B1 only. What these levels mean in IELTS bands: IELTS and CEFR levels.
When the UK asks for a SELT, and when it doesn't
Gov.uk says there are "2 types of test", because routes need different skills:
- All four skills: work routes such as Skilled Worker, and Student. For IELTS, that means IELTS for UKVI.
- Speaking and listening only: citizenship, partner, parent and settlement, among others. For IELTS, Life Skills is the test made for these. For partner and parent routes, gov.uk's caseworker guidance adds that "applicants can pass an approved test at a higher level", and a four-skill test then counts only for speaking and listening.
When a SELT is required, gov.uk sets three conditions. Your test must "be on the list of approved English language tests; have been sat at an approved test location; have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application". For IELTS, the approved tests are "'IELTS for UKVI' or 'IELTS Life Skills'". A standard IELTS result fails the first two conditions, however high the score.
Usually, then, a result is good for 2 years. Settlement and citizenship have exceptions:
- Settlement: a B1 to C2 qualification that has run out may still be used if "it's on the current list of recognised tests" and "it was accepted for another UK immigration application" (gov.uk).
- Citizenship: an expired qualification may be used if it "was accepted when you settled in the UK" (gov.uk).
Degree-level students may not need a SELT at all. Gov.uk: "If you're studying at degree level or above, your Higher Education Provider (HEP) can assess your level of English themselves. This means they may ask you to do a different test." The level must still be equivalent to B2.
IELTS for UKVI prices in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
Fees as published in our Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan guides (checked 28 September 2026):
| Test | Kazakhstan (IDP and British Council) | Uzbekistan (British Council) |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training (computer) | 110,250 KZT | 2,798,000 UZS |
| IELTS for UKVI, Academic or General Training | 123,000 KZT | 3,119,000 UZS |
| IELTS Life Skills A1 or B1 | 100,250 KZT | 2,759,000 UZS |
| UKVI One Skill Retake | 77,500 KZT at British Council; IDP: ask your centre | Not published: check with the centre |
In Kazakhstan, IELTS for UKVI costs 12,750 KZT more than standard IELTS with either provider. At the British Council in Uzbekistan, the difference is 321,000 UZS. IDP Uzbekistan sells standard IELTS (2,665,000 UZS) but doesn't list IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills. Check the price in the booking system on the day you pay.
Before you pay, check five things:
- Exact test and module on the booking, for example IELTS for UKVI (Academic) or IELTS Life Skills A1.
- The venue is on gov.uk's approved test centres list.
- Your ID. Gov.uk accepts a passport, or a photo government ID card in the country that issued it. It must be the original and match your booking.
- Result date vs application date. IELTS for UKVI results take 1 to 5 days, Life Skills up to 9 days.
- Cancellation terms for UKVI (see below) and your centre's local page.
Where to take IELTS for UKVI in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
Gov.uk's list of approved test centres outside the UK, dated 25 September 2026, shows these IELTS centres:
| Country | Approved IELTS centres | Run by |
|---|---|---|
| Kazakhstan, Almaty | 46 Mynbayeva Street | IDP |
| Kazakhstan, Almaty | Samal Towers, 97 Zholdasbekov Street | British Council |
| Kazakhstan, Astana | 12A Kazhymukana Street | IDP |
| Kazakhstan, Astana | Business Centre "Arman", Saryarka 6 | Listed under the IELTS SELT Consortium |
| Uzbekistan, Tashkent | Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) | British Council |
IELTS for UKVI (the version for UK visas) is run by IDP in Almaty and Astana; British Council lists UKVI sessions in Almaty. IDP's UKVI and Life Skills A1 and B1 sessions are in the IDP Kazakhstan test search (test type "Academic for UKVI", "General Training for UKVI" or a Life Skills level). With the British Council, see its Kazakhstan dates page.
In Uzbekistan, TIIAME in Tashkent is the only IELTS SELT centre on the 25 September 2026 list, so plan travel from other cities.
The IDP booking link is a partner link: GoPrep may earn a commission, and the price for you stays the same.
One Skill Retake for IELTS for UKVI
A One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake just one part. For UKVI, the official pages say only this:
- ielts.org: UKVI "is accepting IELTS One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations".
- Gov.uk: you "may be allowed to sit that component again" and should check the provider's terms before booking.
- The usual OSR rules apply: a full test on computer at a centre that offers OSR, the retake within 60 days, and one retake per full test.
Prices are in the table above; ask the centre whether it offers UKVI OSR before you book. OSR covers Academic and General Training, not Life Skills. More in IELTS One Skill Retake.
Booked the wrong test? What you can still do
First, ask the centre where you booked whether it can change the test type. We found no official rule on switching between standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI, so the answer is local. If it can't, the cancellation rules below decide what you get back.
| Your situation | What to do | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Booked standard IELTS, but your visa needs a SELT | Cancel and book IELTS for UKVI, unless the centre can switch the booking | Standard IELTS cancellation rules (next table), then the UKVI fee |
| Already sat standard IELTS, and your visa needs a SELT | Book IELTS for UKVI. First ask if your university will assess your English, if you are a degree-level student | A new UKVI fee |
| Booked IELTS for UKVI, but you only need a university outside the UK | Keep it if the university accepts it: it is the same test | Nothing extra |
Cancelling standard IELTS Academic or General Training on computer (rules from our country guides, checked 28 September 2026):
- Kazakhstan, IDP: refund minus 28,000 KZT if more than 5 days before (local rules; IDP's global page differs, so ask the centre).
- Kazakhstan, British Council: refund minus 33,000 KZT if 15+ days before; within 14 days, no refund.
- Uzbekistan, British Council and IDP: 75% back if you cancel 15 or more days before; within 14 days, no refund (British Council, IDP).
Cancelling or moving IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills follows a separate UKVI policy on ielts.org:
| When you ask | Cancel | Move to another date |
|---|---|---|
| More than 14 days before | 75% refund | Once, to an available date within 3 months of the original test date; fee up to 25% |
| Within 14 days, more than 2 days before | 50% refund | Treated as a cancellation |
| Within 2 days of the test | 25% refund | Treated as a cancellation |
| On test day or after | No refund | Treated as a cancellation |
Local consumer law applies where it gives you better rights. For illness or an emergency, you can ask for exceptional circumstances up to five days after the test, with evidence.
Practice: which test would you book?
Four fictional people, four plans. All make new applications and, unless stated, have no exemption or other accepted proof of English, such as an English-taught degree. Decide what each should book.
- Aigerim, Almaty, has an offer for a master's degree in the UK. The university says it will assess her English itself and accepts IELTS Academic 6.5.
- Jasur, Tashkent, has a Skilled Worker job offer.
- Dana, Astana, is applying for a UK partner visa for the first time.
- Arman, Almaty, booked standard IELTS General Training with the British Council for a Skilled Worker visa. His test is in 20 days, and the centre can't switch the booking.
| Person | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aigerim | Standard IELTS Academic | Her university assesses her English, so she needs no SELT. IELTS for UKVI would work too, for 12,750 KZT more |
| Jasur | IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in every part | A new Skilled Worker application needs B2 in four skills. For IELTS in Uzbekistan, that means British Council at TIIAME in Tashkent, 3,119,000 UZS |
| Dana | IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1 | A first partner visa application needs A1 in speaking and listening, the two skills Life Skills tests: 100,250 KZT |
| Arman | Cancel, then book IELTS for UKVI | At 15+ days, British Council refunds all but 33,000 KZT. Plus 123,000 KZT for UKVI: 156,000 KZT in total, against 123,000 for the right test on day one |
For routes requiring B2 in all four skills, 5.0 in Writing is below the required 5.5, even with 6.5 overall. On first attempts this gap is common. Of 1,054 learners whose first full mock exam on GoPrep fell between 28 July and 26 September 2026, 698 scored 5.5+ overall, and almost half of them (344, or 49%) still had a part below 5.5: most often Listening (165), then Writing (149) and Reading (144), rarely Speaking (26). Writing and Speaking were scored by the GoPrep AI examiner, and a mock is not the real test.

FAQ
Is IELTS UKVI harder than normal IELTS?
No. IDP says IELTS for UKVI is the same as standard IELTS in content, format, scoring and difficulty. Only the approved centre, security and result form differ.
Can I use a normal IELTS result for a UK visa?
Only if your route does not need a SELT, for example a degree course where the university assesses your English itself. Where a SELT is required, gov.uk accepts only approved tests at approved locations: for IELTS, IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills.
How long is IELTS for UKVI valid?
Usually 2 years: gov.uk says the test must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application. For settlement and citizenship, an expired B1 to C2 result may still count if it was accepted in an earlier UK application; gov.uk lists the exact conditions.
What is the difference between IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills?
IELTS for UKVI tests four skills with band scores, for study and work visas. IELTS Life Skills tests speaking and listening at A1, A2 or B1, Pass or Fail, for family, settlement and citizenship routes.
Next step
Book IELTS for UKVI or Life Skills in Almaty or Astana on the IDP Kazakhstan test search or with the British Council, and in Tashkent with the British Council. If your university accepts standard IELTS Academic, use the IDP Uzbekistan dates page or the IDP Kazakhstan search. Then check how long your result stays valid against your application date.
