Cambridge writes the IELTS test, so we compared its books; we didn't check other publishers. The best in 2026 are the newest practice tests: IELTS 19, 20 or 21, in the edition for your module (Academic or General Training), with audio, answer keys, sample Writing answers and a Speaking video. For strategy, add The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS. No book scores your own Writing and Speaking or plans your weeks, so pair it with GoPrep (ours), our recommended companion: AI scoring on the official criteria, a daily plan to your test date and 80+ Academic mock tests per skill in the computer format.

Facts about each book come from Cambridge's descriptions, checked on 30 September 2026.

Cambridge IELTS 1 to 21: which volumes are still worth it

Cambridge doesn't publish a list of which volumes match today's format, so we compared the editions below by what Cambridge's descriptions list.

Cambridge IELTS volumes, by what the publisher lists
VolumesWhat you getHow to use them
IELTS 21 (July 2026), 20 (July 2025), 19 (June 2024)4 tests in an Academic or General Training edition; audio, answer keys, sample Writing answers, a Speaking videoYour main timed mocks

Why start from the newest: some 2026 forum posts say older volumes feel harder or different, and we found no official list of changes. Keep the newest book for final mocks. Unsure of your module? See Academic vs General Training.

The Official Cambridge Guide and skill books

Cambridge sells these books through its shop and booksellers. A full scan of a commercial book shared without the publisher's permission is not a legal copy, and it doesn't give you the online audio and Resource Bank that come with editions that include them.

Free and legal: Cambridge's paper sample tests on the same page, and the ielts.org sample questions with answer keys and model answers.

How to use a book test as a timed computer mock

IELTS is moving to computer delivery from mid-2026, with dates that vary by country and Writing on Paper where available; check the format when you book. Your book is on paper, but you can rebuild computer conditions:

  1. Learn the screens once. Open the free practice experience on ielts.org. Its tests are "not timed", so they teach the layout, not the pace.
  2. Listening, 30 minutes. Play each part once, without pausing, and type answers as you hear them. On computer there is no 10-minute transfer, only 2 minutes to check (IDP).
  3. Reading, 60 minutes. Type these too: there is no extra time to copy.
  4. Writing, 60 minutes for both tasks. Type with spell-check off and the word count visible.
  5. Speaking, 11 to 14 minutes. Have someone ask the book's Part 1 to 3 questions, or record yourself.
  6. Mark strictly. In Listening and Reading, mark against the key: a misspelling is wrong, and so is an answer over the task's word limit. Convert with the book's scoring guidance.

Cambridge's own teachers' blog warns against "treating practice tests as predictions rather than diagnostic tools".

Are Cambridge books easier than the real test?

We read 2026 posts on r/IELTS, a large IELTS forum on Reddit. Of 11 exam reports that compared the real test with Cambridge books, 7 said the real test felt harder, 3 easier and 1 about the same. This is self-reported and rough, not official data.

Cambridge says every part of its recent books is "tested with real students under exam conditions". If your book scores still run higher, check the usual causes:

  • You mark yourself gently. In the real test a missing plural "s" or a spelling slip costs the mark: see Listening spelling rules.
  • No real pressure. Pauses and extra time can inflate a practice score. If you sit the test on computer, also practise reading on screen and typing answers.
  • You have seen the text before, from an earlier attempt or a friend's book.
  • One mock shows one attempt. Of 86 GoPrep learners with 4 or more full mock exams (all four skills 4.0 or higher, 15 July to 26 September 2026), 53 had a full band or more between their best and worst overall result (Writing and Speaking scored by the GoPrep AI examiner). Judge your level on several timed tests, not one.

Where books fall short: Writing and Speaking

A book shows sample answers but can't score your own essay or recording. Cambridge's blog itself calls Writing the part teachers find most difficult to help with when using practice tests.

That gap often sits on your weakest skill. In 727 first full mock exams on GoPrep (28 July to 26 September 2026, all four skills 4.0 or higher), the weakest skill was Writing in 43%, Listening in 42%, Reading in 36% and Speaking in 15% (ties count for each skill; Writing and Speaking were scored by the GoPrep AI examiner).

Your options: a teacher who marks against the public Writing and Speaking criteria, a study partner for Speaking, or an AI platform.

Good Listening and Reading scores, the parts a book can mark, don't close this gap. Of 155 first full mock exams on GoPrep with Listening and Reading both 6.5 or higher (same period and scoring), 52 (34%) had Writing or Speaking below 6.0: Writing in 45 (29%), Speaking in 9 (6%).

Our pick to go with your book: GoPrep

GoPrep is the platform behind this guide (ours), and it does what a book can't. GoPrep won EdTech Project of the Year at the AI & Digital Bridge Awards 2026 in Astana and has 40,000+ users in 140 countries. On GoPrep so far: 516,000+ mock tests and practice sessions taken, and 188,000+ essays and spoken answers checked by AI.

  • Writing and Speaking scored by AI: Writing on the four official criteria (TA or TR, CC, LR, GRA) in half-band steps; Speaking with a transcript plus fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
  • An adaptive daily plan to your test date, with error review of your answers.
  • 80+ mock tests per skill for Academic in the computer format, typed on screen; Listening and Reading also by section. For General Training: 37 Reading and 21 Writing tests.
  • Vocabulary with spaced repetition and Preppy, a voice AI tutor for Speaking practice.
  • Add-ons: Crusher for all skills and Grammar Maxxing.
  • iPhone app plus the web version in any browser, with a Russian and Uzbek interface on the website.

How they fit: the book gives authentic Listening and Reading tests and model answers; GoPrep scores your Writing and Speaking and runs the plan. The quiz gives you the plan; mocks and AI scoring come with a subscription.

GoPrep's Score Guarantee: if your overall IELTS band doesn't rise by at least 1.0, you get 100% of your subscription back, provided you meet the conditions (an official TRF of 6.5 or lower, at least 3 months of subscription, and the full practice plan).

Practice: plan six weeks with books

Dilnoza takes IELTS Academic in 6 weeks and needs 6.5. She owns Cambridge IELTS 12; a friend offers a PDF of IELTS 20. Last book test: Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5. Nobody has marked her Writing or Speaking. What should she do?

Our answer (an example plan, not the only way): buy IELTS 20 or 21 Academic, with its audio and keys, instead of using the PDF. Its 4 tests become her weeks 3 to 6, so she never repeats a test, and IELTS 12 covers the diagnostic. GoPrep scores Writing and Speaking on its own tasks; to get the book's Writing tasks marked, she needs a teacher.

Example: Dilnoza's 6 weeks

3 questions

1Which edition has four complete General Training practice tests?

Books 9 and 10 have four Academic tests plus extra General Training Reading and Writing sections only. From book 11, Cambridge sells a separate General Training edition.

2You scored 8.0 in Reading on a Cambridge test. How should you read that score?

Cambridge calls practice tests diagnostic tools, not predictions. Scores can differ between attempts, so look at several strictly marked, timed tests.

3Which part of your preparation can a Cambridge book not check on its own?

Listening and Reading have answer keys. For Writing the book gives sample answers, but scoring your essay needs a teacher or an AI tool that uses the four official criteria.

FAQ

Which Cambridge IELTS book is best?

The newest one for your module: IELTS 21, 20 or 19, Academic or General Training, with audio, answer keys, sample Writing answers and a Speaking video.

Are Cambridge IELTS books enough to prepare?

For Listening and Reading, a recent Cambridge book with strict timing goes a long way. It won't score your Writing or Speaking, so add a teacher or an AI tool that marks against the official criteria, such as GoPrep (ours).

Are Cambridge IELTS books easier than the real test?

Cambridge says its recent tests are tested with real students under exam conditions. Of the 2026 test-taker reports we read, more said the real test felt harder.

Can I download Cambridge IELTS books as free PDFs?

Not legally. The free official options are Cambridge's paper sample tests and the sample questions on ielts.org.
