If you took IELTS on computer, your results usually appear online 1 to 5 days after the test, and most arrive within 2 days. IELTS Online takes 6 to 8 days, and a paper-based test, where it is still offered, takes 13 days. The online score is provisional: your official proof is the Test Report Form (TRF).

There is no single results day for everyone: the clock starts on your own test date. IELTS says that, worldwide, 80% of scores are available within 2 days (its data for May to June 2024), and it stops offering the paper-based test from mid-2026, with timelines that vary by country. For what else changes on screen, see our guide to computer-delivered IELTS.

Two details are easy to miss. IDP releases paper-based results online "at 12:00 am GMT on the 13th day after the test", which is early morning in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. And the official pages disagree about Writing on Paper: ielts.org says "within 5 days", the British Council's global results page says 13 days. If you chose that option, check your booking confirmation or ask your centre.

British Council Kazakhstan adds that "occasionally a test will need additional time to review", so day 3 or 4 is still inside the official range. Test fees, dates and booking steps are in our guides to IELTS registration in Kazakhstan and IELTS registration in Uzbekistan.

Result late, "under review" or withheld?

A common question from test-takers: the usual time has passed and there is no score, or the portal shows "under review" or "withheld". Here is what the official pages say.

Delayed for checks

The British Council's results FAQ says: "Occasionally, IELTS results are delayed due to quality control checks. These are random checks to ensure scores are fair and accurate." Other reasons it lists include technical issues, suspected malpractice and national holidays. IDP's page on delayed or withheld results adds "additional validation of test performance". A delay alone doesn't tell you which of these applies, and IDP gives no maximum: timelines "can vary depending on the nature of the review".

"Under review": our practical reading

We found no official definition of a portal status called "under review" on the ielts.org, IDP or British Council pages we checked. Those pages do say that some results take longer so the score and your ID details can be checked. Our practical reading, not an official rule: treat it as "not released yet" and follow the steps below.

Withheld for an investigation

Cambridge English (part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment, one of the three IELTS owners) describes the process on its IELTS help page. When statistical checks flag a possible problem, the result is "withheld for investigation". The test centre tells you and invites you to make a statement. After the investigation, the result is either released, and you get your TRF, or permanently withheld. In that second case, Cambridge adds, the test taker "may also be banned from taking IELTS for five years".

How to appeal a permanently withheld result

Cambridge English runs the IELTS Appeals Procedure, but you don't send the appeal to Cambridge yourself. Its conditions of appeal say:

  • Who submits it: the British Council test centre or IDP submits the appeal on your behalf. British Council (and IELTS USA) test-takers appeal via their test centre; IDP test-takers contact appeals.ielts@idp.com; IELTS Online test-takers contact globaloperations.iol@britishcouncil.org or appeals.ielts@idp.com.
  • Deadline: within 21 calendar days of receiving the decision. The appeal fee must also be paid within those 21 days: "Appeals will not be accepted without payment."
  • What to include: the appeal form must clearly set out your grounds for the appeal.
  • Remark first? Not for malpractice decisions: the rule that a remark must come before an appeal "does not apply to appeals against decisions relating to malpractice".
  • Fee and timing: the fee is refunded in full if the appeal is upheld. The outcome of Stage 1 comes in writing within 10 weeks of payment. If you disagree with it, a request for Stage 2 must be made within 14 calendar days of receiving the Stage 1 outcome.

The fee amount isn't published on these pages: ask your test centre, or IDP at the address above.

What to do while you wait

  1. Check the official time for your test type in the table above, and watch your email (including spam) and your portal. IDP advises you to "monitor your email and candidate portal for updates".
  2. Once that time has passed, contact the test centre where you took the test. Both IDP and the British Council send you there first.
  3. If you get a withheld notice, reply to it, make your statement if asked, and read clauses 5.10 and 5.11 of the IELTS terms and conditions, which IDP names as the rules behind withheld results.
  4. Tell your university, employer or visa office early. None of the official pages say a delay extends their deadline.
  5. If you can't wait, IDP says you can take the test again; with two results, "you can choose which result to use".

When you write to your centre, put everything in one message: your name as registered, test date, test type, candidate number, what the portal shows and since when, and your question (what the status means and whether they need anything from you). Don't attach ID documents unless the centre asks.

IDP vs British Council: logging in and your TRF

On its results page, ielts.org says you need "your passport or ID number (the same ID you used when you registered for the test) and your candidate number". The rest depends on your provider.

IDP. For IELTS on computer or IELTS Online, your results and any e-TRF (digital Test Report Form) are in your IDP account. For a paper test, the IDP results form asks for your given name, surname, date of birth and passport or ID number. IDP's Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan pages say you can view results online for 28 days. In India, IDP uses its own Candidate Login, where scores appear under "Declared Result" (IDP India).

British Council. An email links you to the Test Taker Portal, where computer and Online test-takers can download the TRF as a PDF. In Uzbekistan, IELTS for UKVI results "cannot be viewed online", according to the British Council Uzbekistan page.

How long it counts"Valid for two years""Valid for two years" (global page)

Two years is the period IELTS recommends. The British Council Kazakhstan page adds that organisations "can choose to accept results for a longer period", so if your result is older, ask the organisation directly. Our IELTS validity guide explains which date on the TRF counts.

From 15 July 2026, TRFs carry the Ofqual logo and qualification title (Ofqual regulates exams in England). Older TRFs stay valid for university and visa applications. If you received your TRF between 1 June 2024 and 14 July 2026, you can request the updated design free of charge. This is optional and does not extend the result's validity.

How to send your IELTS results to universities

Each organisation chooses post or IELTS Results Service e-delivery (it sees your result online). Ask which, and get its full address or e-delivery account name. Then check your provider's rules:

  • ielts.org and IDP (global): up to five organisations by post free of charge, a processing fee for more; e-delivery to "as many organisations as you like". IELTS Online results can only be shared by e-delivery (ielts.org, IDP).
  • IDP Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan: up to five copies "posted electronically" to the organisations on your application form for free; for more, "there may be additional administrative charges".
  • British Council: up to five additional copies sent to institutions if you add their addresses in the Test Taker Portal within two years of the test. The Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan pages list a fee for each copy after those five.

Organisations can check your result online with your TRF number, which the British Council Kazakhstan page says is in the lower right-hand corner of your TRF.

These are administration fees for the copies themselves; delivery can cost extra. British Council Kazakhstan says a paper copy for an institution without online access "can only be sent by courier", paid by the candidate. British Council Uzbekistan says domestic priority post is free but charges for express courier (GBP 45 in Uzbekistan, GBP 60 international). Confirm the total with your centre before you order.

Next steps after your IELTS result

Start with your requirement, not the overall band: some organisations also set a minimum for each skill. On GoPrep, 62% of first full mock exams with an overall of exactly 6.5 had at least one skill below 6.0 (127 of 204; each learner's first full mock exam, 15 July to 26 September 2026, Writing and Speaking scored by the GoPrep AI examiner). If you are not sure how your overall was rounded, read how the IELTS band score is calculated.

Then find your situation:

  • You met every requirement. Send your TRF the way each organisation asks, using your free copies first.
  • Writing or Speaking is half a band short, and the test felt better than the score. A remark (Enquiry on Results) is worth considering. You apply within 6 weeks of the test date, the score can't go down, and the fee is refunded if a band score rises. Our IELTS remark (EOR) guide helps you decide.
  • One skill is short, and you took IELTS on computer at a centre that offers One Skill Retake. You can sit that one skill again, once per original test, within 60 days of it, if your organisation accepts the result. See our One Skill Retake guide.
  • Two or more skills are short. Plan a full retake after focused preparation (where to start your IELTS preparation).

Half a band can decide the overall: in 1 of 4 full mock exams on GoPrep (578 of 2,307), half a band more in any one skill would have lifted the overall by half a band (15 July to 26 September 2026, Writing and Speaking scored by the GoPrep AI examiner).

GoPrep data54%
of GoPrep learners who took 2 or more full mock exams raised their overall band by at least half a band*. Across all 345 learners, the average first result was 6.0 and the average best result 6.5

4 questions

1You took IELTS on computer with the British Council on Monday. On Wednesday evening there is still no email. What do the official pages say?

The British Council gives 1 to 5 days for IELTS on computer, typically within 2. Even a longer delay can be a random quality check, and a remark only applies to a score you have already received.

2Your IDP account shows 7.0 overall. Your university asks for official proof of your result. What do you send?

IDP says online results are provisional until you receive your official TRF. The 28 days is only how long you can view the result online, not a waiting period.

3You receive a notice that your result is withheld for investigation, and you are invited to make a statement. What is the first step?

At this stage no decision has been made: the investigation is still running and your statement is part of it. An appeal is only possible after a decision to permanently withhold the result, and a remark re-marks a score you have received.

4You booked with IDP. Nine days ago you received a decision that your result is permanently withheld. What can you still do?

The appeal window is 21 calendar days from receiving the decision, so you have 12 days left. IDP test-takers contact appeals.ielts@idp.com, and the fee must be paid in the same window. A remark is not required before appealing a malpractice decision.

Results-day checklist

  1. Note your test date, test type (computer, Writing on Paper, Online) and its official release time.
  2. Keep ready the passport or ID you registered with and your candidate number.
  3. Open the portal from your booking confirmation: IDP account, IDP India Candidate Login or the British Council Test Taker Portal. Check spam first.
  4. Download your e-TRF if you get one, and note your TRF number.
  5. Compare each skill and the overall with your requirement.
  6. Ask each organisation: post or e-delivery, and to which address or account?
  7. Use your free copies first, and ask your centre about fees for more and courier costs.
  8. Short of your requirement? Note the deadlines: 6 weeks for a remark, 60 days for a One Skill Retake.

FAQ

How long does it take to get IELTS results?

IELTS on computer results come 1 to 5 days after the test, usually within 1 to 2 days. IELTS Online takes 6 to 8 days, and a paper-based test, where still offered, takes 13 days (7 days in India), according to ielts.org on 28 September 2026.

How do I check my IDP IELTS results?

For IELTS on computer or IELTS Online, log in to your IDP account at book.ielts.idp.com; in India, use the Candidate Login on ieltsidpindia.com. For a paper-based test, use the results form on ielts.idp.com with your name, date of birth and the passport or ID number you registered with.

What does it mean when IELTS results are withheld?

The result is not released on time while extra checks or an investigation take place. If a result is permanently withheld, your British Council test centre or IDP can submit an appeal to Cambridge English on your behalf; it must be submitted, and the fee paid, within 21 calendar days of receiving the decision.

How many universities can I send my IELTS results to for free?

Under the ielts.org and IDP global rules, up to five organisations by post free of charge and any number by e-delivery. The British Council in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan sends up to five copies to organisations free of charge and, on 28 September 2026, charged KZT 5,000 or GBP 4 (UZS 63,200) per extra copy, plus courier costs in some cases.
