Some people believe that wealthy individuals should pay a much higher rate of tax than others, while others think everyone should pay the same percentage. I will discuss both views and then explain why I favour a progressive system.

Supporters of higher taxes for the rich argue that it is fair, because those with greater incomes can contribute more without losing the essentials of life. A person on a low salary spends nearly all of it on food, rent and transport, so even a small tax is a burden, whereas a high earner still has plenty left. The extra revenue pays for health, education and infrastructure, which benefit the whole population and help to reduce inequality. Many countries, such as Sweden and Germany, use progressive taxation and maintain strong public services.

The opposing view is that a flat rate is simpler and more equal in principle, since everyone pays the same proportion and those who earn more already pay a larger amount in absolute terms. Advocates argue that high rates punish success and discourage hard work, investment and entrepreneurship, and may encourage the rich to avoid tax or move abroad, which could in fact reduce government income. A simple system is also cheaper to administer and leaves fewer loopholes for clever accountants to exploit.

In my opinion, a progressive system is more just. The risk of wealthy people leaving can be reduced by setting rates at reasonable levels and closing loopholes, and the social benefits of reducing poverty and providing quality services are substantial. However, rates should not be so high that they remove the incentive to work.

In conclusion, although a flat tax is simple, I believe that taxing richer people at a higher rate is fairer and better for society, provided it is balanced and well enforced.
