Some people believe that wealthy nations should provide financial aid to poorer ones, while others argue that trade and investment are more effective. I believe that trade and investment offer more lasting benefits, although aid still has a role.

Supporters of aid make a reasonable point. In an emergency, such as a famine or an earthquake, money and supplies can save lives immediately, and no investor will provide them. Aid also pays for basic services like vaccination programmes and primary schools in places where governments cannot raise enough tax. Without such help, children who are sick or illiterate will find it impossible to contribute to the economy in future.

However, aid has well-known weaknesses. Funds are sometimes lost to corruption, or they create dependence, so that governments wait for donations instead of building their own institutions. Trade and investment, by contrast, create jobs and skills. When a foreign company opens a factory, local people earn wages, suppliers gain customers and the government collects taxes that it can spend on public services. Vietnam is a good example: it attracted manufacturing investment, opened its markets and lifted millions of people out of poverty within a generation. Fair trade rules matter here, because wealthy countries that protect their own farmers with subsidies and tariffs make it hard for poor nations to sell their goods.

In my view, the most effective approach combines both elements. Emergency aid and support for health and education should continue, but the long-term priority should be removing trade barriers and encouraging responsible investment so that developing economies can stand on their own.

In conclusion, aid is valuable in crises, yet trade and investment generate sustainable growth. Rich countries should therefore focus more on the latter while retaining targeted assistance.
