The world's fish stocks are declining because of overfishing and pollution. This essay will discuss the causes of this problem and propose some solutions.

Overfishing is mainly driven by demand and technology. As the global population grows and more people eat fish as a source of protein, the quantity caught has risen. At the same time, huge factory ships equipped with sonar and enormous nets can capture entire shoals, taking fish faster than they can reproduce. Weak regulation worsens the problem, because in international waters it is difficult to enforce catch limits, and illegal fishing is widespread. Pollution adds to the damage. Plastic waste, chemicals from farms and oil spills contaminate the sea, destroying coral reefs and coastal nurseries where young fish develop. Rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change also disturb breeding patterns and push fish into different waters.

A number of measures could help. Governments should set scientifically based quotas and enforce them with satellite tracking and inspections, with heavy penalties for illegal vessels. Marine protected areas, where fishing is prohibited, allow populations to recover and then spread into surrounding waters; this approach has worked well around parts of the Mediterranean. Reducing pollution requires stricter control of industrial waste and farm run-off, together with efforts to cut plastic use. Consumers also have a role: choosing sustainably certified seafood puts pressure on suppliers, while fish farming, if managed properly, can reduce reliance on wild stocks. Finally, international agreements are essential, since fish do not respect national borders.

In conclusion, increasing demand, modern fishing technology, weak enforcement and pollution threaten fish stocks. Firm quotas, protected zones, cleaner seas and responsible consumer choices could restore them.
