Many parts of the world suffer from a shortage of clean drinking water. This essay will explain why this happens and suggest ways to address it.

There are several causes. Climate change is altering rainfall patterns, so droughts have become longer and more frequent in regions such as East Africa and the Middle East. Population growth and urbanisation increase demand, and rapidly expanding cities often lack the infrastructure to deliver water to every home. Agriculture is another major factor, as irrigation uses around seventy per cent of the world's freshwater, and inefficient methods waste much of it. Pollution makes the situation worse: industrial waste and untreated sewage contaminate rivers and groundwater, so that even where water exists, it is unsafe to drink. In poorer countries, lack of investment and poor maintenance mean that leaking pipes lose large quantities before the water reaches users.

Solutions should combine technology with better management. Governments and international organisations can fund water treatment plants, repair leaking networks and build wells and storage tanks in remote communities. Farmers can adopt drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to the roots of crops, and grow varieties that need less water. In dry coastal regions, desalination provides an alternative, as Israel and Saudi Arabia have shown, though it requires a lot of energy. Households and industries can reduce consumption through recycling water and fixing leaks, and pricing systems can discourage waste. Finally, countries that share rivers must cooperate to manage them fairly, rather than allowing disputes to deepen the crisis.

In conclusion, climate change, population pressure, wasteful agriculture and pollution lie behind water shortages. Investment in infrastructure, efficient farming, new technology and international cooperation would help to provide clean water for all.
