Some people argue that the best way to reduce crime is to introduce longer prison sentences. I disagree with this view, because longer sentences alone do not tackle the causes of crime.

There is some logic behind the idea. Offenders who are in prison cannot commit crimes against the public, so long sentences protect society from violent and persistent criminals, at least for a time. The fear of a severe punishment may also discourage some people from breaking the law, and a harsh penalty shows victims that their suffering is taken seriously.

Nevertheless, evidence suggests that the length of a sentence has little influence on crime rates. Most criminals do not expect to be caught, so the severity of the punishment weighs less on them than the chance of arrest. A visible police presence and a high likelihood of detection are therefore far more effective deterrents. Longer sentences are also very expensive, as housing a prisoner costs tens of thousands of pounds a year, and money spent on prisons cannot be used for schools or youth services. Overcrowded prisons may increase violence and reduce the chance of rehabilitation, so prisoners come out angrier and more likely to reoffend. The United States, which has some of the longest sentences in the developed world, also has one of the highest imprisonment rates without a correspondingly low level of crime.

A more effective approach addresses root causes: reducing poverty and unemployment, improving education, treating addiction and offering training to offenders so that they can find work after release. Combined with efficient policing, these measures prevent crime before it happens.

In conclusion, longer sentences have limited impact on crime, and a combination of prevention, effective policing and rehabilitation would work better. I therefore disagree with the statement.
