A place in my city that has changed enormously is the riverside area near the old railway bridge. When I was a child, it was a rather neglected part of town, but today it is one of the most attractive places to walk or meet friends.

Ten years ago, the riverbank was covered with rubbish, and the buildings along it were either empty or used as warehouses. The path was muddy, and there were no lights, so people avoided going there in the evening. My mother used to tell me not to play in that area. Then, around 2018, the city council started a redevelopment project. They cleaned the river, built a wide stone promenade and planted hundreds of trees. They also turned some of the old warehouses into cafes, small galleries and shops. Now there are cycling paths, benches and playgrounds, and on weekends there is a food market and sometimes live music. On summer evenings, it is full of people of all ages.

I have rather mixed feelings about the changes, though mostly positive. On the one hand, the area is cleaner, safer and more enjoyable, and it has given the city a place where people can relax. I go there at least once a week for a run or to meet my friends. On the other hand, I miss a little of the old character, and prices at some of the new cafes are higher than I would like. A couple of small family workshops had to move away, which is a pity. Overall, though, I think the transformation was a success, and I hope other neglected places will receive the same attention.
