Governments must decide how to balance protecting nature with expanding the economy. While some believe the environment should come first and others favour growth, I think the two goals are best pursued together.

Those who prioritise the environment argue that economic activity depends on a healthy planet. Polluted air and water raise medical costs, and the loss of forests, soil and fisheries eventually destroys the resources on which industry relies. Climate change is a clear example: floods and droughts already cause billions of dollars in damage every year, and delaying action will make the bill higher. Protecting nature now is therefore a form of long-term economic planning.

Others insist that growth must come first, particularly in poorer nations. A government that cannot provide jobs, food and healthcare will find it very hard to persuade people to care about conservation. Wealthier countries industrialised without strict limits and became rich in the process, so critics say it is unfair to ask developing nations to slow down. Growth also creates the tax revenue and technology needed to clean up pollution later, as seen in cities that could afford modern sewage systems only after their economies expanded.

In my opinion, the choice is a false one. The idea of sustainable development shows that countries can raise living standards while limiting harm, for instance by investing in solar power, which is now cheaper than coal in many places and also creates employment. Poorer countries can be helped through climate finance and technology sharing.

In conclusion, although both priorities have merit, I believe governments should pursue growth that does not destroy the environment, since neither can last without the other.
