Some people believe that physical education should be obligatory for all pupils, while others think students should decide for themselves whether to play sports. I support the first view, although I think schools should offer plenty of choice within the subject.

Those who argue for compulsory lessons point first to health. Childhood obesity is rising in many countries, and regular exercise at school is one of the few ways to ensure that all children are active, since some families lack the time or money for clubs. Team activities also teach valuable skills, such as cooperation, discipline and dealing with defeat, and these qualities are useful in later work and relationships. Finally, habits formed in childhood often continue into adulthood, so a child who learns to enjoy exercise is more likely to remain healthy.

The opposing side argues that not every student enjoys sport, and forcing them to take part may make them dislike it for life. Some children are shy or less athletic and may feel embarrassed in front of classmates. Others say that time would be better used for academic subjects, especially when exams approach, and that if students choose an activity themselves, they will be more motivated and put in greater effort.

I understand these concerns, but I believe they can be addressed without making the subject optional. Schools can offer a range of activities, including dance, swimming, yoga and cycling, so that every pupil finds something suitable, and they can emphasise participation and fun over competition. A couple of hours a week would not seriously reduce time for academic study; research suggests exercise actually improves concentration.

In conclusion, physical education should be compulsory because of its benefits for health and character, provided that the activities are varied and inclusive.
