Cyber attacks on banks, hospitals and government websites are becoming increasingly common. This essay will examine why this is happening and suggest ways to reduce the danger.

Several factors explain the rise. First, more of our essential services now run online, which gives criminals many more targets. A hospital that stores patient records electronically, for example, can be paralysed by a single ransomware attack and may pay thousands of dollars to restore its systems. Second, attacking has become easier and more profitable. Hacking tools can be bought cheaply on hidden websites, and criminals operating from another country face little risk of arrest. Some governments are also believed to sponsor attacks on rival states in order to steal information or cause disruption. Finally, many organisations still use outdated software and poorly trained staff, and one employee clicking a fraudulent link can open the door for intruders.

There are several practical solutions. Organisations should update their software regularly, back up data offline and train employees to recognise suspicious emails. Larger institutions can employ specialists to test their defences by simulating attacks and fixing the weaknesses they find. Governments also have a role: they can pass laws requiring companies to report breaches promptly and impose heavy fines on those that ignore basic security. Because cybercriminals work across borders, international cooperation is vital, and countries should share intelligence and agree to extradite offenders, as European nations have begun to do through Europol.

In conclusion, the growth of online services, cheap hacking tools and weak security habits explain the increase in cyber attacks. Better training, stronger regulation and international cooperation would make the systems that we all depend on considerably safer.
