Process diagram: The water cycle

Pick out the main features of this process diagram for your overview, write your report on a 20-minute timer, then compare it with a band-8 model answer.

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how water circulates between the Earth and the atmosphere.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The water cycle
  1. 1EvaporationHeat from the sun turns sea and lake water into vapour
  2. 2TranspirationPlants release water vapour from their leaves
  3. 3CondensationRising vapour cools and forms clouds
  4. 4PrecipitationWater falls as rain, snow or hail
  5. 5Surface run-offWater flows over land into rivers
  6. 6InfiltrationSome water soaks into the soil and rocks
  7. 7Groundwater flowUnderground water moves slowly towards the sea
  8. 8CollectionRivers and groundwater return water to the ocean

The cycle then repeats from stage 1.

What your overview should say

An overview names the main trends or differences in one or two sentences, without numbers. These are the features a strong answer picks out:

  1. 1Overall, the water cycle is a continuous, natural process with eight main stages, in which water moves from the sea into the air, falls as precipitation and eventually returns to the sea.
  2. 2It begins with evaporation and transpiration, which turn liquid water into vapour, followed by condensation into clouds and precipitation.
  3. 3The water then either flows over the land as run-off or soaks into the ground, and both routes carry it back to the ocean.

The diagram illustrates how water circulates continuously between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere in the water cycle.

Overall, the process is a closed cycle with eight stages and no real starting point. Water is carried up into the atmosphere by heat and plants, and it eventually returns to the ocean, from where it can evaporate again.

The cycle can be described as beginning with evaporation, when heat from the sun turns water from the sea and lakes into vapour. At the same time, water vapour is released by plants from their leaves, a process known as transpiration. The vapour then rises, cools and is condensed into clouds. Next, the water falls back to the ground as precipitation in the form of rain, snow or hail.

Once it has reached the ground, the water follows two routes. Some of it flows over the land as surface run-off and enters rivers, while some is absorbed into the soil and rocks through infiltration. This underground water then moves slowly towards the sea as groundwater flow. Finally, the water is collected in the ocean, as both rivers and groundwater return it there, and the cycle starts again.
