Band 8 sample answer
271 words · about 2 minutes at a natural pace · Phrases from the vocabulary list are highlighted.
I strongly believe that perseverance is the most important ingredient of success. By this, I mean continuing to work towards your goals even when you face setbacks, rather than giving up when things become difficult.
This belief comes from several sources. First, it comes from my parents, who often told me that nobody gets anywhere without effort. Second, it comes from stories I've read about successful people. For example, the inventor Thomas Edison reportedly tried thousands of materials before finding a workable light bulb filament, and many famous authors were rejected by publishers repeatedly before one of their books was accepted.
I've also seen it in real life. A good example is my neighbour, Mr Karim, who started a small furniture workshop twenty years ago. In the first years, he nearly went bankrupt twice, because customers were few and his equipment broke down. Many people advised him to close the business and get a regular job. But he continued, learned from his errors, and improved the quality of his products. Today he runs a large workshop with twenty employees and exports to neighbouring countries.
I believe this because talent and opportunities are only useful if you keep working with them. Many gifted people never reach their potential since they quit after the first failure, while ordinary people achieve extraordinary things through consistent effort. Furthermore, perseverance is something that anyone can develop, unlike luck or natural talent.
I try to apply this belief in my own life. When I fail a test or get a rejection, I remind myself that it's just one step in a long process, and I try again.
What to notice
- It takes the points on the card in order, so the examiner can follow it.
- Each point gets a specific detail or a short story, which is what keeps a talk going for two minutes.
- The "explain" line at the end gets the most time, because that is where you give an opinion and show your range of language.

Frequently asked questions
How do I answer an abstract IELTS cue card, like a rule or a decision?
Make it concrete straight away: name the rule, the advice or the decision, then tell the situation where it mattered to you. An abstract card answered with a real example is easier to talk about and easier to follow.
